Google's Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP) is an open standard that lets AI agents browse, compare and buy from online shops without a custom integration for each retailer. PPC Land reports that Google launched it on 11 January 2026, with Shopify, Etsy, Wayfair, Target and Walmart as co-developers. This guide covers what UCP does, who it applies to today, and the groundwork a shop can do now.
What UCP Actually Does
UCP covers product discovery, checkout, identity linking and post-purchase steps. The retailer stays the merchant of record, so the sale, the customer relationship and the order data remain with the shop. Google says UCP will power checkout on eligible product listings in AI Mode and the Gemini app, using card details saved in Google Wallet.
Alongside UCP, Google announced a Business Agent (a branded assistant that answers product questions in a retailer's voice) and a pilot called Direct Offers, which shows exclusive discounts in AI Mode. eMarketer notes that Walmart, Target and Shopify were the first to enable selling through AI Mode.
Who Can Use It Right Now
The launch coverage we read focuses on eligible US retailers and doesn't give a UK date. If you sell in the UK, treat UCP as something to prepare for rather than something to switch on this month. Shopify stores are the most likely to get access early, because Shopify co-developed the standard.
What To Do Before It Reaches You
Agents can only recommend and buy what they can read accurately. The preparation is mostly product data hygiene, and it pays off in ordinary search as well:
- Keep price and stock accurate. An agent that completes a purchase at the wrong price creates a refund, not a sale. Feed and on-page data should match.
- Fill the Merchant Center attributes you skip today. Brand, GTIN, colour, size, material and shipping details are what agents compare products on. See our product page checklist.
- Mark up products accurately. Product and Offer schema should match the visible page, as covered in Schema Markup for Ecommerce.
- State delivery and returns clearly. Policies written in plain text on a crawlable page are easier for any system to quote correctly.
What Google Says About Optimising For This
Google's own guide to generative AI features names UCP as one of the emerging protocols for agentic commerce and says Merchant Center feeds help products appear in AI responses. It also says no special markup or AI-specific files are needed. That fits our view: the work is accurate data and good pages, not a new tactic.
